The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope
نویسنده
چکیده
The ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope, at a depth of 2475 m in the Mediterranean Sea, near Toulon, is taking data in its final configuration of 12 detection lines. Each line is equipped with 75 photomultipliers (PMT) housed in glass pressure spheres arranged in 25 triplets at depths between 100 and 450 m above the sea floor. The PMTs look down at 45 to have better sensitivity to the Cherenkov light from upgoing muons produced in the interactions of high energy neutrinos traversing the Earth. Such neutrinos may arrive from a variety of astrophysical sources, though the majority are atmospheric neutrinos. The data from 5 lines in operation in 2007 yielded a sufficient number of downgoing muons with which to study the detector performances, the vertical muon intensity and reconstruct the first upgoing neutrino induced muons.

Positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope
Completed in May 2008, the ANTARES neutrino telescope is located 40 km off the coast of Toulon, at a depth of about 2500 m. The telescope consists of 12 detector lines housing a total of 884 optical modules. Each line is anchored to the seabed and pulled taught by the buoyancy of the individual optical modules and a top buoy. Due to the fluid nature of the sea-water detecting medium and the fle...

The ANTARES collaboration is currently operating the largest neutrino detector in the Northern Hemisphere. One of the goals of ANTARES is the search for dark matter in the universe. In this paper, the first results on the search for dark matter in the Sun with ANTARES in its 5 line configuration, as well as sensitivity studies on the dark matter search with the full ANTARES detector and the fut...
متن کاملUnderwater acoustic detection of UHE neutrinos with the ANTARES experiment
The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope is a water Cherenkov detector composed of an array of approximately 900 photomultiplier tubes in 12 vertical strings, spread over an area of about 0.1 km with an instrumented height of about 350 metres. ANTARES, built in the Mediterranean Sea, is the biggest neutrino telescope operating in the northern hemisphere. Acoustic sensors (AMADEUS project) have been integ...
متن کاملANTARES sensitivity to steady cosmic gamma ray sources
Amongst the atmospheric muons recorded by neutrino telescopes are muons produced by the interaction of cosmic gamma rays with the Earth’s atmosphere. Although they are not numerous, it has been suggested that such muons could be distinguished by neutrino telescopes from the isotropic background by correlating their direction with known sources of gamma rays. The ANTARES neutrino telescope is ta...
متن کاملReconstruction of Atmospheric Neutrinos in Antares
In May 2008, the Antares neutrino telescope was completed at 2.5 km depth in the Mediterranean Sea; data taking has been going on since. A prerequisite for neutrino astronomy is an accurate reconstruction of the neutrino events, as well as a detailed understanding of the atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds. Several methods have been developed to confront the challenges of muon reconstruct...

The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope [1] is a water Cherenkov detector currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. It is also designed to serve as a platform for investigations of the deep-sea environment. In this context, the ANTARES group at the University of Erlangen will integrate acoustic sensors within the infrastructure of the experiment. With this dedicated setup, tests of acoustic...
